Animal Farm by George Orwell

Theme

I think this book is criticizing dictatorship. It shows how dictatorship causes conflicts negative effects on human society. After reading this book, I realized how dictatorship is bad. This book tells us the stupidity of humans who think dictatorship is good for human society. There may be some good effect on society, but basically it ruins a country. There were no successful dictatorship ever. As this book shows how bad the dictators are, I really think they are dumb and selfish. Dictatorship has to be disappeared from human society.

The reason why the theme is so important to teenagers is that it gives teenagers ideas of dictatorship and those ideas show the negative effects of the dictatorship and how it causes conflicts. Teenagers ought to know how bad is dictatorship and in the future, they have to make the dictatorship disappear out of the human society.

Main Character

Mr. Jones

Mr. Jones is a farmer who is the owner of the farm. He does not care about animals. I really didn't like him. He was a dictator of the farm. But he gets conquered by animals in the farm because of the rebellion. He should have taken a good care of the farm and satisfy them to control them. But he didn't, and he showed us how dictatorship ends. He stands for the Nicholas II in the real world.

Napoleon

He is a clever pig that conquers the farm after Mr. Jones. He competes with Snowball, which is also a pig, and oust Snowball with his own followers, the dogs. After the Rebellion, Napoleon becomes the dictator of the farm, and he becomes like a human because of the greed of the power. He didn't listen to the Old Major. I don't like him because he is selfish. He betrayed the animals to conquer the farm. And he stands for the Joseph Stalin in the real world.

Snowball

He is a pig that competes with Napoleon. He is less clever than Napoleon. At first he gained animals' devotion, but he was ousted by Napoleon. He should have convinced Napoleon to stop the dictatorship instead of conpeting with him. He stands for the Leon Trotsky in the real world.

Old major

He is a pig that motivated the rebellion. He tought animals the song "Beasts of England" Before he died, he told Napoleon and Snoball to lead the animals. And I agree with him because he cares about the farm animals, he is wise, and he is not a dictator. He stands for the Karl Marx in the real world.

Mood

The mood of this book is sarcastic because the author is satirizing human to animals. Also the mood is objective because the author is criticizing the dictatorship. The fact that the author is satirizing human to animals is sarcastic, but the theme is objective. And it is better to read a objective book with sarcasm because it is less boring. Satirizing human to animals was a really good choice.

Climax

The climax part is where Napoleon ousted Snowball and conquered and controled the farm because when it happened, the dictatorship started. And then the bad things happened in the farm animals. Napoleon revised the "7 commandments" secretly to make the animals confuse. After revising it, he controlled the animals. Even the execution had been carried out. And this part really made me detest the pigs.

Setting

I think the author chose a really good setting. The settings could be a school or something else, but I think farm is the best one to show his idea most effectively. I really think the farm fits the theme. And using animals instead of people was a good choice, too. Allegory tells us an idea more effectively. And there was some humans in it. Mixture of human and animals was good, too.

The time setting was the Russian Revolution. The author satirized the people related to the Russian Revolution to farm animals. For example, the author used pigs as a dictators because the author thinks the dictators are like pigs, except the Old Major. And all characters in the book fit the humans in the real world.

Quotation

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

This is a phrase that was said by pigs. This phrase shows the change of idea of the pigs, Napoleon and Snowball Pigs, before they took over the animals, said that all animals are equal. But after Mr. Jones was gone, pigs became like the human. They mention about different equalness. They said that they are higher and better like human. But they are wrong. All animals are equal and all of them should be treated the same. Equal means the same. There is no higher equalness.
